Tomorrow is May 1, 2009. It just so happens to be the day that prices increase $10 for GRE registration. Not that I'm THAT hard up, I just figured it could be a great motivator to commit to a test date. Not to mention, the sooner I book I have more options of picking my desired test location, date and time. I'm officially registered for Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 12:00. That date is between my scheduled volunteer gigs and it's just before the beginning of the fall semester.
So yes, I'm registered for the GRE. My grad school needle has moved away from "Nahhh" and is slowly creeping past "Ehhh?" to the gradual realization that my current path has it's limits and graduate work could give me some new direction.
Now, I have one of those GOALS I've read so much about! Something concrete to which I can apply some motivational/productivity principles I've read about.
The next 3 months MUST be about studying and it officially begins tomorrow. My current morning routine is to hit the snooze button SEVERAL times and curse the sardine can of an N-Judah that doesn't seem to care that it's making me late for work. Ideally, my new routine will cover multiple goals: I'll leave the distracting comfort of my home and get to work 1-2 hours early, get some studying then clock in consistently on time. At some point, I'll require to myself to remain at work after hours for more studying.
I need to work a lot more organizing my study plan. Setting up my microgoals. I've got to strike a balance between pushing myself and not making the plan so rigid that I don't follow through.
I want to do 2 essays per week. I've never been adept at timed essays, so I need to practice.
I've got lots of prep materials from LSAT and GMAT. I also want to start with reading comprehension in LSAT, because I'll probably pass the materials along to someone who wants to go to law school. Also, getting used to reading such passages should help with my writing.
The GMAT materials will be used as my math and grammar foundation.
I also need to set goals in regards to vocabulary. I should try to set a goal for the amount of words I'll work on per week. There are many word lists on line. I need to set up a consistent way to
I think today I'll swing by ... no....well...? I want to swing by a book store to review GRE prep materials (so I can buy the stuff I want cheaper off Amazon). I WANT to go to Green Apple which is pretty far away. They also sell used books which are very tempting. I'll also pass cheap places where I can find some other wants, that could be helpful...I need a trashcan for my room, perhaps a huge calendar I can put up, index cards for vocab. All good stuff, I just don't wanna get carried away buying things I don't need or won't use yet.
If all I want to do it review prep books, I should go to Border's downtown. It's closer, wider selection and it's all retail, which means I'm less likely to purchase. I'd have to pass my favorite clothing stores to get there...which are easier items for me to pass up (unless they are having sales...)
Interestingly enough, in both scenarios, I'm tempted to spend money on anything but the specific items I'm going to look at. :) Just an interesting observation.
OK. I've rambled enough. I guess I'll run through a reading comp example and decide what I'll do offline. I'm sure I'll let you know what I did :)
Late!

I've been cleaning out my email inboxes most of the day and I came across something I thought I'd post. 2 years ago, the operating partner of my firm proposed a contest: if iTunes came to us and wanted our "Celebrity" top 10 songs, what would make our list?
This is mine:
In no particular order:
*** "Three Days" by Jane's Addiction
As a sheltered high school youth, I developed an obsession with Dave Navarro and his bands: Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jane's Addiction. It's incredibly layered and over 10 minutes long with some great Navarro solos and I used to just envelope myself in this song daily. Years later, I would finally see Navarro and original Jane's drummer Stephen Perkins play with their new (crappy) band The Panic Channel. I was close enough that Navarro kissed my hand during the show and afterwards Perkins took my friend and I on the tour bus to hang out. Over the next few days, I really began to think about how my life had changed since I became aware of Navarro and, in essence, he became aware of me (if only for a moment). 10 years ago, I never could have conceived of the moments and experiences that would take me from a directionless lump in Galveston, Texas to the world-traveled, Berkeley-educated chick partying in San Francisco on 6/6/06. It was an event that renewed my faith in myself and the things that I dream about, even if it seems silly, shallow and/or impossible. A week later, I got my second tattoo so I wouldn't forget. A few weeks later, Navarro split with Carmen Electra, but I swear I had nothing to do with it.
*** "Strangers" by Portishead.
For the past 5 years, people have been telling me that I'd love Portishead and about six months ago, I finally checked them out... I don't listen to many new bands, but they are new(est) to me band that I listen to constantly.
*** "Quisiera Ser" by Alejandro Sanz.
The only guy I've ever met off of MySpace is an incredibly hot fanged-Dutchman named Phillippe. Yes. He has fangs. Imagine Brad Pitt from "Interview with the Vampire" but with Brad's "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" buzz cut. I met up with him when I traveled to Barcelona and on my last day there, we had lunch, shared gelato and wandered the streets of Barcelona and stopped off at this English-language used bookstore owned by this crazy American hippie. It was there that I found a copy of Sanz's "El Alma al Aire" CD for € 0.60. The CD is cheesy pop, which sucks musically, but its a great way to practice Spanish pronunciation.
*** "Closer" by Nine Inch Nails
My all time favorite NIN song (and I'm not ashamed to admit it). Trent's voice makes this one of the hottest songs EVER, not to mention Marilyn Manson came up with the infamous chorus (Manson's Reznor-produced album "Antichrist Superstar" is one of my "If you were marooned on an island..." albums). I will always love the video image of Reznor rotating in mid-air.
***"Dirty Harry" by Gorillaz
"Demon Days" is one of the most solid albums I've heard in recent years. I've played "Dirty Harry" to death, but it will always be special to me because in some Ally-McBeal-sian way, I would love this to be my theme song. Like, I'd love to be cool enought that I enter a room and this song begins to play...
*** "Girls Girls Girls" covered by Richard Cheese.
Richard Cheese does incredibly fun lounge/jazz covers of (uncensored) rock and rap songs. It's some of the best background music ever created ("Apertif for Destruction" is a good album to start with). While I do prefer other songs he's covered ("Rock the Casbah," "Personal Jesus" and "Gin and Juice" for example ) I picked this song because I'm currently reading "The Dirt," a bio on Motley Crue.
*** "Citizen Erased" by MUSE
When I went to Rome for my 25th birthday I met Dave the Aussie (who moved to Rome to study violin making). His favorite band was MUSE and since he was planning to fly to another country just to see these guys play, I figured they were worth checking out. Singer Matt Bellamy is a ridiculously talented rock guitarist and classically trained pianist, which is rare to find expressed on one album, let alone in the same song...or simultaneously by the same guy! One of the richest sounding rock trios you can find, that totally deliver in concert. I've seen them 3 times and if I didn't despise moshing-rock crowds, I'd be seeing them next month. Skip "Showbiz" and check out any of their other albums.
*** "If I Fell" live version covered by Maroon 5.
The Beatles are one of my all-time faves and I'm definitely a fan of the film "A Hard Days Night," however, Maroon 5 did an amazing cover and it makes my list. I first saw Maroon 5 open for Nikka Costa in early 2002 and became a huge fan. I annoyed family and friends about them for 2 years...until they became media darlings...then MTV and commercial radio annoyed people for me. When I was in Scotland, their 1.22.03 Acoustic was released and as a devoted fan, I immediately bought it. The gem of that album is "If I Fell" which isn't so much a band cover as it is a vehicle for singer Adam Levine to do what he does best...
*** "Pagan Poetry" by Bjork
Favorite song by this Icelandic pixie. She gets props for the banned video which is a fascinating contrast to the songs imagery of motherhood. Really great to listen to if I'm in a semi-down mood and just wanna space out.
*** "The End" by The Doors Really, do I need to say anything?
Songs Omitted: Street Spirit (Fade out) by Radiohead; "Sweet Jane" version by Cowboy Junkies
Here is what the Judge had to say about my list:
In second place: What can we say—the judges believe that D’s playlist would set records if actually sold on itunes. To be sure, if the music alone didn’t draw them in, D’s vivid descriptions of the songs’ meanings to her would. Dave Navarro, the Dutchman named Phillippe, a reference to Ally McBeal, this playlist has it all—even an artist named Richard Cheese. D, well done.
I won a $25 gift card to iTunes (which I later used upgrade my iTouch's software). ;-)
Now it's two years later... I'll have to think about what would make my top ten nowadays...

Emergency Fund or Credit Card Debt?
The eternal question...
Earlier today, I was glancing at a couple of blogs I refer to for personal finance (http://www.thesimpledollar.com/) and my continuing efforts to declutter and simplify (http://zenhabits.net/). On Zen Habits, I found 73 Great Debt Elimination Tips.
(#71 is to watch MaxedOut, which I'd already seen).
I watched the Frontline episode just after work. I got home and began looking through my net worth balance sheet, my accounts and my credit card statements. I recalled that a friend recently recommended that I use some of my emergency fund to pay down some of my ... and I went ahead and set up the transfers to get it done ASAP.
Then I began to freak out (I still have time to stop it ::: chews fingers nails :::). While I'd be paying down 60% of my credit card balance (not including my regularly scheduled payment for the month), I'd be using over 80% of my emergency fund!!!
There is a certain amount of comfort and security I developed with my growing Emergency Fund. I've NEVER had this much money saved at one time and it feels great! But I'm reminded of the 4 credit card holders that were interviewed in the Frontline episode. Many of them had savings they could apply towards their debt. Even though they were paying more in interest than their return on savings, they preferred to retain the "security" of having an Emergency Fund in reserve. Shouldn't we feel more secure when we don't have debt looming over our heads? It's really interesting how normalized it is to carry debt (in America).
I could choose a slightly less aggressive route...pay it off in June instead of April or May and not put as large a dent in my Emergency Fund...
But I thought about it...actually I AGONIZED about it, then googled "Emergency Fund or Debt" and read some of the results and THEN decided....I won't back out.
I'm single. No kids. No car. I'm healthy (*as long as I don't OD on Advil getting used to Mirena). If I got fired tomorrow, I'm confident I could find SOMETHING that'll pay enough to cover my relatively low expenses. It's one thing to enjoy the safety of an Emergency Fund, but it'll be a whole new feeling to get rid of a credit balance that has revolved for nearly 3 years! As soon as my credit debt is gone, I can replenish my Emergency Fund and make extra payments on my student loans.
DEBT = BAD!!! I banish thee!!!

#70 Credit documentary. Watch the PBS documentary about credit card companies. Get mad, really mad and start hating the credit industry. They are enabling you to do some terrible things to yourself. Cut up your cards and pledge to never use them again. It is a form of slavery.

The Credit Crisis
Just found this video clip created by Jonathan Jarvis called "The Crisis of Credit Visualized."
We've discussed the roots of the current state of our economy in the "Fundamentals of Investing" class I'm taking at City College, but it's nice to have a concise explanation I can share with family and friends via the internet.
If only there was a concise video to explain how we get out of this predicament, unfortunately it will not be that simple.
I'm sure that I'll blog about my financial state in the not-too-distant future, which will be good because my financial goals have yet to be officially documented.
...And they will remain undocumented...for now. It is about 5:30 and I want to swing by the store before I head home for the day.
Enjoy the video!

New Welcome!!
A friend of mine suggested I take up blogging, so I figured I'd make use of this old blog I started. I didn't want to erase my old posts, so here's my new Welcome... Intro...thing.
I admit that I consider starting a blog on major life landmark occasions like everyone else: New Year's and my birthday (which is in July). I always hesitate because I always tend to make it more difficult in my mind than it has to be. What will the format be? Will I use pseudonyms for the people I talk about? Can I be open and honest knowing that those I discuss may read it? In the end, I'm not really considering those things and, as the show company says, Just Do(ing) It! I've decided that blogging would be an important step for me because I feel as if I'm stumbling through my life like a zombie. I absorb information best through reading and I process my problems best through writing. With this lil' blog I can get things off my chest...instead of sending my novella-like emails, around which a friend has admitted to take a coffee break while reading them. My blog won't have a specific theme, like some blogs do. One of the issues that has lead me to blog is money, and my financial struggles will no doubt come up from time to time. Perhaps I'll talk about boys, shows I've seen, books I'm reading...all basic 20-something stuff...which will probably be related to some movie I saw (since I"m a movie freak and I can relate anything to a movie). Hopefully, it'll come out articulately and with a touch of humor. Enjoy.

Check Ins
My first blog was created a blog last year to document my first experience abroad. I spent two months in Brighton, England at the University of Sussex. I thought a blog would be the easiest way to keep my friends and family updated without having to send out individual emails. If you want to check out my travel blog it is classychiq.joeuser.com. Because it started off as as travel blog, I felt oddly about putting more personal stuff on there. I was going to create another blog with joeuser...but come on - Google rocks! So here I am...
Welcome!
Come one! Come all!
I'm D and I'm a Fem Sexy. What is a Fem Sexy you may ask....
A Fem Sexy is one of the glorious women (and few select men) who've made it through the most amazing class taught at UC Berkeley: Female Sexuality (or Fem Sex). To clarify, it is not a catalog class, but a DeCal, which is a specific category of courses created by students, for students. These classes are for credit only and can be on anything from community volunteer work to studying The Simpsons (Simpsons and Philosophy was one of the most popular classes ever taught).
Fem Sex used to have the reputation of being a white, femi-nazi lesbian class...but as the class evolves, the are working to address issues of all women of different races and sexual orientations. The class is not about information as much as it is about building a sense of community among women, one little group at a time. It is about fostering safe space to discuss and learn about yourself and other women. It is an amazing class and I felt privileged to take the class and honored to be a facilitator. It is something I will hold with me always and it has become my alter-ego.
Thanks for stopping by... Enjoy!

Enjoy!
